The East Haddam Stage Company will perform "Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Speckled Band," a 1930s murder mystery live-action radio drama, on tour this fall, with a free performance at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Salem Public Library.

EHSC is using Victorian actor and Connecticut native William Gillette's actual script. Gillette created the character of Sherlock Holmes for the stage in 1899, and "Speckled Band" was originally broadcast live in October of 1930 out of New York City.

The program is a one-hour presentation beginning with a 15-minute introduction by Producing Artistic Director Kandie Carle, exploring mid-20th century radio show history and lore, on to how EHSCO came to have Gillette's script. Then, four actors will portray seven different characters (including live sound effects) in the 30-minute murder mystery. Attendees become the studio audience, and the event wraps up with a Q&A.
