Elizabeth Karter Watch Rock Nature Preserve
Town: Old Lyme
Directions: From I-95, take Exit 70. Left at end of ramp onto Lyme Street, which turns into McCurdy Road after about a mile. Cross Route 156 onto Caulkins Road; turn right immediately; the road bends to the left, then take a quick right onto Joel Road.
Where to Park: Parking area is spacious.
Description: The 25-acre nature preserve where the Duck River enters the Connecticut River includes wide, flat, easy trails. A loop can be completed in about 20 minutes at a brisk pace, or can include more criss-crossing and exploring.
Regulations: Closed at sunset.
Amenities: Picnic tables, an outhouse, letterboxing.
Natural Features: Shore birds, especially owls and osprey; great views of the mouth of the Connecticut River, which is the main scenic draw of the walk.
Fees: Free.
