Montville -- The Finance Committee voted on Tuesday night to consider raising tax-assessment exemptions for veterans.
The maximum exemption for veterans would be raised from $1,000 to $10,000 under the proposal, which will be forwarded to the Town Council for consideration.
The exemption would mirror a policy in place in Preston. According to Finance Director Terry Hart, 148 residents would qualify. Ultimately, it would mean about $41,000 less in taxes for the town after factoring in the maximum tax exemption, the number of residents who qualify and the current mill rate.
Town Councilor Billy Caron was a strong supporter of the increase in the veterans' exemption. Town Council Chairwoman Candy Buebendorf, who sits on the Finance Committee, said the loss in taxes would be minimal for the town.
