To shovel or to seed, who can tell?

New Norwich Recreation Director C. Roger Moss thought he would take advantage of February’s consistent warm weather and the resulting soft ground and get a jump on seeding much-used recreation fields near the recreation office.

That was Thursday, Feb. 23.

Then winter suddenly returned in a surprise move by Friday morning.

Then the weather warmed right up again, probably allowing crews to get back out there to continue seeding. Until yesterday, when the afternoon rain turned to snow and sleet, briefly coating the fields again before turning back to rain.

I don’t think the ground in our woods ever froze solid this winter. The surface froze hard a few times, but I’ve been uprooting invasive barberry bushes from the soft ground all winter. At least there’s some advantage to a year without a winter.

I’m a fan of winter. I love snow cover on fields and woods paths, but this year the crocuses are blooming already and the daffodil greens are 5 inches tall.

So maybe the city recreation crews should keep on seeding.
