Following up on her win at the Oakdale School Spelling Bee, Lily placed another award on the mantel by winning the Eastern Connecticut Spelling Bee. This contest was held at Kelly Middle School in Norwich on Friday night. Lily battled with another highly qualified speller as semi-finalists, but Lily finally outlasted her opponent with the word wainscot Lily's next step is to compete at the national level near Washington D. C. which takes place between May 27th and June 1st. Scripps is the nation's largest and longest-running educational promotion, administered on a not-for-profit basis by The E.W. Scripps Company and local spelling bee sponsors in the United States, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Department of Defense Schools in Europe; also, the Bahamas, Canada, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. The purpose of the spelling bees is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. The Norwich Bulletin was the local sponsor for this event.
