Montville – Police say the bones found Sunday afternoon off Oxoboxo Dam Road are human skeletal remains. The area is being treated as a crime scene.
Oxoboxo Dam Road at the intersection of Old Colchester Road to Williams Road is closed to traffic. Police say detectives will likely investigate the area through Wednesday. The road has been closed since about 6 a.m. Monday morning.
State police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance said a group of children discovered the bones around 4 p.m. Sunday and called state and Montville police. Police said some of the remains remained partially buried. Police provided no indication of how long the bones may have been at the site.
In addition to police, the state medical examiner, a forensic anthropologist and other experts are investigating the site.
The remains will be taken to the office of the Chief State’s Medical Examiner for a post-mortem examination.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
