Susan Walsh, President, Ocean Beach Neighborhood Association New London
Publication: The Day
In January my neighbors and I went before the New London Public Safety Committee voicing concerns over the construction of a cellphone tower at Ocean Beach Park. We offered researched alternatives to the federal emergency mandate and the cellular coverage issue. Councilor Wade Hyslop, the chairman, recommended that a group be formed of citizens and professionals in the telecommunications industry. This group would research options and present findings to the committee at a later date. Within days, myself and two neighbors volunteered to be in this group. We are still awaiting an acknowledgement. As of today, there are no published minutes/public record of that meeting held in January.
Months later, the issue resurfaced as a referral to Planning and Zoning: C.G.S. Section 8-24 Referral. Proposal: Construction of and lease arrangement to establish a cellular communication tower and support facilities. Site: OBP.
On April 5, my neighbors and I presented our researched options to P&Z. The proposed site by the Gam was successfully defeated with a vote of 6-0.
I am left asking the question, where is the transparency in city government? Who in government is supporting antiquated technology that will destroy a public park and a neighborhood?
Sales of single-family homes in eastern Connecticut surged in the first quarter of 2012. Do you plan on buying or selling a home this year?
