Stonington budget town meeting set for Monday night

Stonington — A town meeting on the proposed $57.1 million budget for 2012-13 and its 0.42-mill tax rate increase will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at Stonington High School.

No vote will be taken on the budget at the meeting because a referendum has been scheduled for May 8.

Last week, a large group of school budget supporters successfully convinced the Board of Finance to restore most of the $156,215 it had cut from the proposed $33.1 million school budget. The board decided to restore $150,000 of the money.

If the budget is defeated at the referendum, the finance board has said it will be forced to cut the school budget "because that's where the money is" according to finance board Chairman Glenn Frishman. The school budget shows a 4 percent increase.
