Montville – State police said an elderly Uncasville woman died Wednesday afternoon in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 395 Southbound.

Police were unsure if Edwina Maryeski, 73, of 33 Hewitt Drive, died from a medical condition or from injuries sustained during the crash just before 12:30 p.m. near exit 79a on I-395.

Police said Maryeski was headed southbound when her Subaru Legacy drifted to its left into the grassy median on the highway. The vehicle veered back across two southbound lanes of traffic, police said, and collided into the guardrail of the exit 79a on-ramp. The car continued south before coming to "an uncontrolled rest" in the right shoulder against the guardrail just south of the exit 79a on-ramp.

The roadway was closed for several hours as police and emergency personnel responded. All lanes have reopened.

Police said the case remains under investigation.
