They say don’t feed the geese for a reason. Getting scraps of bread can encourage overpopulation in urban parks, discourage the birds from flying south for the winter and pose a nutritional risk for the animals.

I’ve heard a lot about this problem lately, but it wasn’t until this morning that I came across quite possibly the most interesting approach to dealing with the problem. A story on ecoRI.org, an environmental news website for the Ocean State, details how geese were captured and removed from Roger Williams Park in Providence, then processed for delivery to nearby soup kitchens.

From city pier in New London to Rogers Lake in Old Lyme, I’ve come across a fair number of geese flocks in the area. What would you think if they suddenly came to a table near you?
