Officials in Newtown are asking that no additional donations be sent of such items as teddy bears, food, clothes, school supplies, blankets, toys, letters, cards, candles and artwork, according to an email from John Voket, associate editor of The Newtown Bee.
The community is unable "to receive, process, store and distribute what was arriving" after a gunman killed 20 schoolchildren, he wrote.
"They are asking that any items already collected be distributed within the areas or communities of origin with Newtown's deepest gratitude, and in memory of those we lost on December 14," Voket wrote.
For more information on donating, go to the Newtown Savings Bank website at nsbonline.com. United Way of Western Connecticut is helping organize the Sandy Hook School Support Fund.
