For those worried about an overwhelming deficit, the cliff may be our friend.

It mandates large spending cuts, while our president appears at a loss to find any.

It gives Republicans two clubs - tax rates and debt ceiling - instead of debt ceiling alone. That should help in negotiations to slow the growth of spending.

Come January, all of Bowles/Simpson can be back on the table.
