Once the holidays are over, you can look at the protracted boreal stretch known as January Through March in two ways. There's the "in the bleak-midwinter mind-set when folks go all Jack Torrance on you. Or, consider "Winter Wit and Whimsy," a new art show running through Feb. 6 at the i5 Education Center and Gallery in Gales Ferry. Participating and cheery artists are Nancy MacBride, Elaine Mills, Alice Facente and Lori Rembetski, whose "Matilda" is shown above.

The opening reception takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, with presentations by Rembetski (5:30 p.m.), Facente (6 p.m.) and MacBride (6:45 p.m.). The gallery is at 18 Hurlbutt Road, Gales Ferry. For info, call (860) 287-7400 or visit i5teachingnetwork.com.
