Consider becoming a mentor to the young

Today there are many individuals who face difficult times. Many children live with a single parent, while too many American high school students do not graduate.

A caring adult can make a change in a child's life. January is National Mentoring Month, and we at Groton Public Schools say, "Share what you know - mentor a child."

At this time, many of Groton's youth may not be receiving the support necessary to become successful adults in our society. This is the reason we need additional mentor volunteers. An hour a week spent with a youngster can make a difference for a lifetime.

National studies have shown that young people who are mentored are more likely to achieve better grades in school, create higher goals, and are less likely to start using drugs.

I'm certain you will enjoy your mentor experience. You will get personal satisfaction just observing the positive change in the child you meet, as you watch the growth in maturity.

Please take part in the Groton Mentoring Program. New mentor training is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Feb.7 at West Side Middle School, 250 Brandegee Ave.
