Norwich - The John B. Stanton School in Norwich received $565,000 Friday from the state Bond Commission for security and technology improvements requested as one of the four Network Schools in the governor's school reform program.

Superintendent Abby Dolliver said school officials were asked to submit requests for long-term building improvements last fall - before the Sandy Hook school shooting - as part of the Network School program. Dolliver said some of the bond funding will address security needs, including new doors and improved communication equipment.

Stanton will receive $209,000 for laptops, cameras and whiteboard technology and $20,000 for wireless connections to improve communication and student instruction.

The school will receive $216,000 for one new portable classroom and $120,000 to replace exterior doors for security. At Stanton, a sprawling, single-story elementary school, all classrooms have exterior doors to the outside. School officials plan to replace the doors with better security doors, Dolliver said.

Stanton initially was budgeted to receive $1.5 million in this first year of the three-year Network improvement program. But mid-year budget cuts announced by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy in December could reduce funding by as much as $180,000. Exact cuts in the Network funding are not yet known, Dolliver said.
