Fitch's Nasser selected to National Wrestling Hall of Fame

Bernie Nasser, a veteran official and retired teacher and coach at Fitch High School, has been selected for induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.

The Connecticut chapter Class of 2013 will be honored during its annual induction dinner on April 20, at the MGM Grand Hotel at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Nasser will be joined by John Chacho, a former official and Staples coach, Frank Chaves, retired Simsbury coach an a current official, former Central Connecticut coach Ken DeStefanis, Rick Shook, the current coach at Danbury, and Staff Sergeant Joseph Kapacziewski, a former wrestler at Bristol Eastern and current Army Ranger and has been on multiple deployments.

Nasser, Chacho, Chaves, DeStefanis and Shook will receive Lifetime Achievement awards while Kapacziewski will receive a Medal of Courage.

Nasser spent 36 years as a teacher and coach at Fitch before retiring five years ago. He coached boys' soccer for 19 years, softball for 15 and went 72-35-2 during seven seasons as the wrestling coach.

Nasser is currently in his 38th year as an official, serving terms as vice president (1984-91) and president (1991-93) of the Connecticut Interscholastic Wrestling Officials Association, He has officiated at more than 30 CIAC state tournaments, 20 State Open and five New England tournaments. Last season was his 50th season in wrestling.
