President Barack Obama shakes hands with Julia Pierson, the new director of the U.S. Secret Service, after she was sworn in by Vice President Joe Biden Wednesday  in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington. Pierson is the first female director in the agency's 148-year history. The Secret Service is charged with protecting the president, vice president and their families, as well as investigating financial crimes. Pierson takes over an agency that has been marred by scandal.
