Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams Street, New London, CT
the original artwork of James Gurney, the author and illustrator of Dinotopia, an illustrated book series that tells the story of an island where humans and sentient dinosaurs live together in harmony.
On view through February 2, the exhibition brings together paintings from Gurney’s well-loved books A Land Apart From Time, The World Beneath, Journey to Chandara, and First Flight, along with sketches and maquettes from Gurney’s studio. Dinosaur specimens from the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, including a Deinonychus skull and a Tyrannosaurus tooth, will complement the paintings and illuminate the science behind Gurney’s art. The Jewish Genealogical Society of CT presents Godfrey Library Executive Director Beth Mariotti on Sunday, January 20, 2012 at 1:30 pm at Godfrey Library. Beth will discuss materials such as newspapers, city directories, state and local histories, and funeral and cemetery records and will also describe the Family History Center and how it can be used for researching immigrant ancestors.
Program is free and open to the public.
Godfrey Memorial Library is the only CT library devoted to genealogy.

The Old Saybrook Fire Department's Junior Division is pleased to host several upcoming Sunday pancake breakfasts, featuring eggs, sausage, bacon, toast, coffee, tea and juice, with the first breakfast scheduled for Sunday, January 20th, from 8 a.m. to noon at fire headquarters.
The pancake breakfast is $5 per person. The funds assist the OSFD's Junior (high-school age) Division. Other Sunday morning breakfasts will be hosted on: February 3rd, February 17th and March 3rd All of the breakfasts will be at the Old Saybrook Fire Department headquarters, 310 Main Street, at the intersection of Main Street and Old Boston Post Road.

The family-friendly Holiday Train Show exhibit is back at the Connecticut River Museum in Essex for its nineteenth year of fun for all ages. Train artist Steve Cryan has worked his magic again with more trains, new scenery, and lots of surprises to be found in the fully operational 26-foot model train layout. Visitors are challenged to find a scavenger list of various objects hidden within the settings while the very young can get hands-on at the expanded American Flyer and Lionel train layout designed for toddler size viewing. The exhibit is a true locomotive extravaganza and a perfect outing for train fans and all who are young at heart. Sponsored by Liberty Bank, The Safety Zone and Valley Courier, the exhibit runs through February 10, 2013.

High Hopes Therapeutic Riding, Inc. is pleased to present the worlds oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella group, the Yale Whiffenpoofs, in concert on January 20th at the First Church of Christ in Old Saybrook. Founded in 1909, the Whiffs began as a senior quartet that met for weekly concerts at Morys Temple Bar, the famous Yale tavern. Today the group has become one of Yales most celebrated and hallowed traditions, carrying on a century of musical excellence and professional showmanship at Yale, across America, and around the world. Proceeds from this concert will benefit the programs and participants of High Hopes Therapeutic Riding. Following the concert, a special full tea reception with the Whiffenpoofs will be held at the church.
