The Norwich Police patrol boat provides escort as the Amistad enters Norwich Harbor after transiting the Thames River Tuesday, June 12, 2012. The Amistad will be in Norwich for the Freedom Weekend festivities marking the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. The schooner is a replica of the 19th century ship of the same name that was seized by a group of African captives being transported from Havana, Cuba into slavery on plantations on the eastern end of the island in 1839 and eventually ended up in New London, Conn., and then freed by decision of the U.S. Supreme Court.
