USS California heads back to base

The tug John Paul guides the U.S. Navy Virginia Class attack submarine USS California (SSN 781) up the Thames River past the Fort Griswold monument from the General Dynamics Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, Conn., to the navy submarine base upriver at the conclusion of the vessel's 11-month "post-shakedown availability" Tuesday, January 29, 2013. The California, 8th boat in the Virginia class, was commissioned in October of 2011 in Newport News, Virginia. The post-shakedown availability comprises a series of maintenance, repairs, alterations and testing.
