Fifth grade students from East Lyme Middle School churn butter as they learn about various aspects of colonial life from members of the East Lyme Historical Society and reenactment groups during the 12th annual 5th Grade Hands-on Program at the historical society's Thomas Lee House on West Main St. in Niantic Tuesday, May 7, 2013. Students learned about skills necessary for survival in the 17th century. They churned butter, cared for cattle and oxen, learned about colonial cooking, woodworking, threw axes and watched a colonial firearms demonstration among other activities.
