How do I find an article I saw in print?

First try using the search bar at the top of any of our pages. Searching for keywords or names in the article works best. We don't always use the same headline in print as we do online, so searching for a complete headline may not work.

There is some content that we run in the paper that we do not run online, due to copyright or licensing restrictions. This includes New York Times articles and columnists, sports agate and comics.

Still can't find it? Send an e-mail to daywebadmin@TheDay.com.

How far back do the online archives go?

Articles from June 2009 onward are available indefinitely on theday.com. A solution for searching older content will be available soon.

Where are obituaries?

Obituaries can be accessed through the "obituaries" link on the right-hand side of the top navigation bar. Or, use this link: www.legacy.com/theday

Can I link to or reprint an online article?

Placing a link from your website to theday.com means that you provide a hypertext connection from your location on the Web to ours, using an HTML command such as:

<a href="http://www.TheDay.com">TheDay.com - Southeasthern Connecticut's News Source</a>

We do not allow mirroring, that is, copying our articles and posting them on your website, without permission. Creating a link to theday.com does not require permission unless:

1. You wish to use our logo
2. You charge a fee for the pages containing a link to theday.com, or
3. The link opens within a frame or in a manner which makes the content of theday.com appear as if it were in your site

In any of these cases to request permission write to daywebadmin@theday.com. Otherwise, you're free to link to our site.

You are responsible for maintaining your own links to our website. There is no guarantee that the structure of our website will remain the same over time.

I saw a photo or video online that I would like to download. Can I purchase it? How can I use it?

Photos

Photographs that have appeared in The Day are available for purchase and are for personal use only. The photo must be taken by a Day photographer. Browse or search for photos here.

If you would like to reprint a Day photo, you must receive permission from The Day. To apply for a copyright release, please supply The Day with as much detail pertaining to the intended use of the photo. In your request letter, be sure to explain the intended purpose, distribution numbers, issue date and name of publication, number of pages in publication, selling cost of publication, selling information (such as over-the-counter, organization members only, office copies, mail subscribers, etc.), intended purpose of display photos, blow-up photos or exhibit photos, and any other important information regarding your organization's intentions and background. Please inform us if you are working with any deadlines.

Approval will be made by the managing editor and publisher of The Day. Send your request to daywebadmin@theday.com or: Managing Editor, c/o The Day, PO Box 1231, New London, CT, 06320, Attn: Copyright Release Request.

If your request is approved, you will be notified of the copyright fee for the release. At that time, your consent to proceed will be needed. You will be required to make payment before the photograph will be printed and distributed to you. Please allow at least six weeks for delivery. The Day and the photographer must be credited for the photograph. Note that the copyright release is for a one-time use only. A complimentary copy of your publication must be sent to The Day's photo reprint desk. Photos are not to be used for political endorsements or advertising purposes.

Videos

DVD copies of videos produced by the staff of The Day are available to be purchased for personal use. To place an order, please print this order form and return it with a check. Please allow four to six weeks for delivery.

Questions about DVD sales can be sent to p.huoppi@theday.com.

I am not able to watch the video clips. What should I do?

Our videos require the Adobe Flash Player. Download a free version of the software at www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer.

Why do you allow anonymous comments?

There is a long tradition of signed and verified letters to the editor published in newspapers. The Day takes pride in the quantity and quality of the letters it receives. The newspaper runs about eight to 10 letters to the editor every day. That kind of volume is manageable to verify each letter writer's identity and authenticate the source. This authentication process provides letters with a greater degree of credibility and weight.

Contrast that to the hundreds of Web comments on theday.com posted any given day to numerous stories. Verifying all those comments is beyond our range of resources. Even if it were possible to verify all those Web comments, the time lag involved defeats the immediacy, spontaneity and interactive freedom of the Internet.

The two mediums - letters to the editor and Web comments - both play a role in the day-to-day debate about the issues confronting our community and nation.

Generally speaking, letters tend to be more reflective, Web comments more visceral and pointed.

Web comments are a marvelous vehicle for offering immediate feedback and public debate over the merits of news stories and commentaries. They have evolved with a less strict set of standards for publishing. Those include anonymous postings, more casual grammar, sometimes raw and rude language.

theday.com no longer monitors comments. The new site requires commenters to register and allows users to report abusive comments, which are then brought to the attention of Day staff. Those who write offensive Web comments will be banned from interacting with theday.com.

The new safeguards are a self-policing mechanism designed to allow the community to help set the standards for all who participate on theday.com.

The system is far from perfect. As we grow and learn on the website, this process will constantly be monitored and refined. People have different opinions determining what is obscene, slanderous or offensive, and this will probably continue to be a point of contention.
