WHAT IS THIS?
Zip06 is the community Web site for The Day newspaper and the Times weeklies covering southeastern Connecticut, and the Shore Publishing weeklies covering the central Connecticut shoreline. We've combined news and information from all of our publications into one dynamic Web site. Each town now has its own page. Whatever you're interested in, you can find hyper-local staff-written news about you and your community right here.
Not only will you find great content by our award-winning staff, but Zip06 is also the place for your voice. You can write blogs, submit news, share your photos and post to our calendar. You'll find content from your neighbors and community that give you the full picture of what's going on in your community.
WHERE DOES THE NAME ZIP06 COME FROM?
We are a town-oriented local site and the name Zip06 simply refers to zip codes starting with 06, which describes all Connecticut towns. While we currently don't cover the whole state, we are leaving the option open to expand our coverage area.
We also cover a "Zip02" - Westerly, Rhode Island.
WHY SHOULD I JOIN?
We invite you to join the discussion by making a free member account with us. You can post comments on our stories and submit news, blogs, events and photos directly to the newsroom. Your posts will appear online instantly and will be considered for print publication in your weekly community paper or The Day.
HOW TO JOIN
The "Register" link can be found at the very top of the Zip06 home page as well as along the right side under the blue Welcome box. Clicking one of these links will bring you to the registration form. Joining allows you to comment on stories as a reader and submit press releases or blogs, photos and events for yourself or your organization.
A few minutes after registering, you will receive an e-mail to confirm your registration. Click on the link in the e-mail to activate your account. Now you're ready to post!
HOW TO POST
There are a few ways to post depending on where you are on the site. Once you've joined and are signed in, you can always go to your profile page and use the links on the right-hand side under "My Info" to post stories, photos and calendar events. You can also navigate to www.zip06.com and use the links in the navigation bar under "Contribute."
If you're posting a blog or press release, choose a title. You will see that the author name, location, and e-mail address are already filled out for you based on the information you provided when you created your account. These fields are not editable on this form (use the My Settings link at the very top of the page to change these).
Below that, you will see a larger box called "Story Body" in which to write or paste the content of your blog or press release.
You have the option to post a video and/or a photo with your blog. We currently support the embedding of videos uploaded to YouTube. To embed a YouTube video with your post, insert the embed code in the designated field on the form. Click the "Show Me How" link in the video posting area to learn more about how to do this.
If you want to include a photo with your blog or press release, click the Browse button next to the Photo field. This will take you to your hard drive and you can select the photo you wish to use. You can then add a byline and caption. This will ensure that the photo appears with all its relevant information right with your text on your town page.
The final step is to click the Submit button. You will be taken back to your profile page where you will see the title of your post and an Edit and Delete button if you wish to edit or remove your post.
If you do not see the content you just uploaded on your profile page, click your browser's Refresh button. It can sometimes take a minute for the content to display.
To post a photo with a caption, or create a photo gallery, click the Add New button next to the My Photos/Photo Galleries area on your profile page. On the posting screen, you will see a place to add a title for your photo or photo gallery and a place to add a summary if you're making a gallery. If you're only posting a single photo, bypass the summary and add a caption. This designation allows you to post individual captions for each photo in a gallery while having the ability to post a summary about the entire gallery overall.
Under Photo Gallery Item 1, click the Browse button. You will be taken to your hard drive where you can select the photo you want to include. Add a caption and byline. Click the Submit button if you're only posting a single photo, and the Add Another Photo link if you're creating a gallery with multiple photos.
Once you've submitted the gallery, use the Edit link if you wish to make changes to your photo gallery.
