Waterford – A New London man was killed and another was injured early this morning when the car they were riding in struck a curb and came to rest on its side against an Old Norwich Road home.
The passenger, Carlos A. Herrera, 37, of 67 Hawthorne Drive, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver, Julian Arias, 32, of 26 Fuller St., was taken to the William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich.
Police said the 2002 Mitsubishi Eclipse, driven by Arias, was traveling south on Old Norwich Road just before 1 a.m. when it crossed into the northbound lane, struck a curb and then hit a house at 121 Old Norwich Road, police said.
The roads around the crash scene were reopened about 7:15 a.m., after being closed for the investigation.
Waterford police and fire personnel responded to the scene as well as Lawrence & Memorial paramedics, an ambulance from Montville and a Life Star helicopter.
Lt. Jeff Nixon said police are looking into whether speed or alcohol use contributed to the accident.
A building official was called to the house but Nixon said the damage was minimal. A post to a porch was damaged.
The accident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 442-9451.
