    Oswegatchie Hills

    This fungus was found growing in the middle of the trail in early March.

    Oswegatchie Hills

    Town: East Lyme

    Directions: From I-95, take Exit 74; right onto Route 161 south, follow for several miles until the entrance to Veterans Field, on your left (across from gas station). A nearby sign directs you to the trail entrance.

    Where to Park: Park in the parking lot by the softball field.

    Description: Several trails of various lengths, the longest of which is about 3 miles and moderately strenuous and hilly in spots.

    Regulations: No motorized vehicles. Closed at sunset.

    Amenities: None.

    Natural Features: The preserve is largely comprised of two major rock ridges running north and south; between the ridges is the ravine gouged out by glaciers. Scenic views and wetlands throughout the area, including Clark Pond at the south entrance.

    Fees: Free.

    Good to know: Trails have been re-blazed recently. A new map can be found on the

    Friends Web site. There are five other entrances in addition to Veterans Field; consult Web site for locations
