Montville reviews legal options over siting decision

Montville - The town council and the mayor have directed the town attorney to review the process used by the state to approve a proposal to site a regional sexual offender treatment facility on the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center property on Norwich-New London Turnpike.

At a meeting Monday night, Councilor Howard "Russ" Beetham asked Mayor Joseph Jaskiewicz to instruct the law firm of Shipman and Goodwin to begin the research, but the mayor informed the councilor the work had already begun.

Council members expressed their frustration over the state Department of Corrections and judicial branch's decision to sign a contract with The Connection Inc. last week to open the 24-bed facility for pre-release and probationary offenders.

Town officials and residents have protested the proposal for months and supported an amendment to a bill approved by the General Assembly that required various consideration be given to where to locate such facilities.

Town councilors argued that the Montville location is in the heart of the economic corridor and close to schools and childcare facilities.
