The woman accused of killing her mother, Bertha Reynolds, in July 1993 has waived her right to an evidentiary hearing and pleaded not guilty.

Irene Reynolds, 38, of Baltic was charged May 14 with fatally beating and strangling her mother after the two fought about money. Reynolds was arrested May 14 by the Southeastern Connecticut Cold Case unit, which had reinvestigated the murder that took place at the victim's home at 84 Laurel Hill Ave. in Norwich. The unit obtained a warrant for Rey-nolds' arrest after her former roommate provided a videotaped statement in which she said she witnessed Reynolds murdering her mother.

As a defendant in a murder case, Reynolds was entitled to a probable cause hearing within 60 days of her arrest. At the hearing, the state would have called witnesses in an effort to convince a judge there is enough evidence to continue prosecuting Reynolds. After discussions with her attorney, Linda J. Sullivan, Reynolds decided to waive her right to the hearing.

Reynolds is being held in lieu of a $2 million bond at the Janet S. York Correctional Institution. She will return to court on Sept. 22, when the state, defense attorney and judge will begin discussing whether they can resolve the case short of trial.
