Bacon’s Shea to receive Gold Key

Bacon Academy's Dave Shea, the only coach in state history to win more than 300 games in both boys' and girls' basketball, has been selected to receive a Gold Key from the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance.

Shea, 77, will be honored along with soccer legend Kristine Lilly of Wilton, former Trinity College men's hockey coach John Dunham and Trinity Catholic of Stamford boys' basketball coach Mike Walsh on April 29 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.

Shea, who grew up in Colchester and graduated from Bacon in 1952, coached boys' basketball for 24 seasons (1961-85), leading the Bobcats to the Class S state title in 1981 (his son John was a member of that team). He has been the girls' coach for the past 18 seasons, leading Bacon to the Class M state title in 2009 (his granddaughter Katie Mahoney was a member of that team). He has a combined record 642-275 in the two sports, and also had more than 300 wins in 24 seasons as the baseball coach (he begins year 25 in 2012).

Lilly, a member of the U.S. women's national soccer team for 24 years, made her U.S. debut when she was a 16-year-old star at Wilton High School. She participated in five World Cups and three Olympic games, winning a pair of gold medals.

Dunham built one of the most successful Division III hockey programs in the country, posting a 441-306-34 records in 37 years before retiring in 2007. The Bantams reached the NCAA Final Four in 2005.

Walsh has guided Trinity Catholic to six state championships and 11 state finals during his 33rd season as head coach and has a career record of 526-242.
