Some Submarine Base activities closed this week

Groton - The Naval Submarine Base is closing several base support activities to participate in an annual Navy-wide security training exercise this week. Exercise Solid Curtain/Citadel Shield 2012, March 19 to 24, is an exercise designed to enhance the readiness of naval security forces to respond to threats.

The base may increase its force protection condition March 22 to March 24, which would limit access to the base and impact traffic. Residents are asked to avoid the base on those dates unless it is absolutely necessary.

All of the base's support activities will close or have limited openings for mission-essential personnel. The Commissary, Navy Exchange, Fleet and Family Support Center and most Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities on the base will be closed.

The Morton Hall Gymnasium, Liberty Center and Reunions bowling complex will be open but will not hold classes or events. The Housing Office will close March 23. The Personnel Support Activity Detachment will offer limited services. The Naval Branch Health Clinic Groton will handle acute-care cases for active-duty service members only. Off base, the Child Development Center, the Dolphin Mart and the Navy Lodge will be open.
