UConn coach Jim Calhoun and incoming recruit Omar Calhoun both earned honors.

-- Jim Calhoun will receive The Mannie Jackson Basketball Human Spirit Award on Sept. 6 during one of the events leading up to the 2012 Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement ceremonies in Springfield, Mass.

According to a Basketball Hall of Fame press release, the award is given to individuals “embracing the core values of the game through hard work, dedication, and resilience; striving to continuously improve the community that they serve, and making an ongoing commitment to others.

“Beyond the game, award winners must reflect the values of Mannie Jackson’s life-long mission to overcome obstacles and challenge the status quo, while taking responsibility for personal actions and seeking the highest standard of excellence.”

During his Hall of Fame career, Calhoun has been involved with numerous charities, including devoting time and money to cancer research and education and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.  He’s helped raise about $1 million for the Connecticut Food Bank and Foodshare with his annual holiday food drive. He established with his wife, Pat, the Calhoun Cardiology Research Fund.

Calhoun is one of three award winners. Phoenix Suns guard Grant Hill and Dr. Richard Lapchick, founder and director of the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, also will be honored.

-- Omar Calhoun was the star of second-annual All-American Championship Sunday in New Orleans. He scored an event-record 26 points and earned team most valuable player honors in the East’s 84-72 win over the West.

Calhoun, a 6-foot-3 guard out of Christ the King in Brooklyn, converted 8-of-12 field goals and 10-of-11 free throws. He also had two assists and two rebounds.

So far, he is the only member of UConn's incoming recruiting class.
