Local colleges: Coast Guard routs Babson 25-3 in baseball

New London - Coast Guard Academy broke open a tight game by exploding for 14 runs in the fifth and sixth innings and the Bears went on to rout Babson College 25-3 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference baseball game on Wednesday.

The Bears (11-13, 5-6) had a season-high 24 hits and had 10 players hit safely (nine with at least two hits apiece). Ed Sella led the Coast Guard offense by going 4-for-6 with a double, three runs scored and two RBI, while Eric Gerken, Tyler Babkiewich and Eddie Kalenkiewicz had three hits apiece.

Softball

• Wesleyan scored five runs in the fifth inning and defeated Coast Guard, 8-4, in a nonleague game. The Bears (14-10) committed a season-high seven errors. Kaitlin Ward singled and double for Coast Guard and Devil Fellman had a bases-clearing double in the fifth.

Men's lacrosse

• John Lyons scored three goals to lift Connecticut College past New England College, 14-9. Chad Sawyer and Thomas Woessner of Old Lyme each had two goals for the Camels (4-4).

Men's tennis

• Senior Nick Martin rallied from a set down to score the decisive point at No. 4 singles, helping Coast Guard beat Babson College, 5-4, in the NEWMAC. Martin won 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, 6-2. Greg Mitchell and Josh Fischer also won at singles for the Bears (6-2, 1-0).
