Providence — Graham Tyler's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth Wednesday lifted Brown to an 8-7 win over UConn in a nonleague baseball game.
Former Fitch standout Kevin Carlow pitched two innings for Brown (5-21), allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Billy Ferriter had three hits and drove in two runs and Old Lyme's Ryan Fuller had a run-scoring triple for UConn (19-14).
Softball
• Former Fitch standout Brittany Duclos homered for UConn, but the Huskies lost to Quinnipiac 5-4. Waterford's Jen Ward, who reached on a hit by pitch three times, also stole three bases and scored a run for UConn (17-15).
• Fitch graduate Kristina Torres struck out 12 and helped Saint Joseph College sweep a doubleheader from Mitchell College, 2-1 and 11-3. Torres was the winning pitcher in the first game, outdueling St. Bernard graduate Marissa Thomas, who allowed two earned runs and struck out three.
College football
• UConn's annual Blue-White spring game will be televised live by SNY from Rentschler Field on Saturday, April 21, at 1 p.m. Kevin Burkhardt, SNY's on-field reporter for the New York Mets, will handle the play-by-play while Sean Mulcahy, a former UConn captain, will provide the commentary. The game will be re-aired on Sunday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m., and again on Monday, April 23, at 11 a.m.
Women's basketball
• Sophomore forward Michala Johnson has informed coach Geno Auriemma of her intention to transfer from UConn, and there were multiple reports on Tuesday that said she would transfer to Wisconsin and sit out the 2012-13 season. Johnson, a native of Bellwood, Ill., averaged 1.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in 5.1 minutes per game and played in 56 games.
"I have really enjoyed getting to know Michala over the last two years," Auriemma said. "Recently, she came to us and expressed an interest in being closer to home and I can respect that. I wish Michala nothing but the best."
