Waterford — A delivery man is in the intensive care unit at Hartford Hospital after a 1,000-pound slab of stone fell on him Friday morning at Salem Stone Design, police said.
Police said Wellington Soares, 56, of Framingham, Mass., was unloading the slab at the business, located at 18A Industrial Drive, around 11:51 a.m. when it fell on him.
Life Star helicopter landed at the state highway department facility, which is near Salem Stone Design, and transported Soares to Hartford Hospital, where he was in intensive care around 8:15 p.m. Friday.
Police the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has taken over the investigation because it is a workplace accident.
The Cohanzie and Quaker Hill fire departments responded, as did Lawrence & Memorial Hospital paramedics.
