Bear sightings

• The Coast Guard Academy women's varsity eight is ranked fourth nationally. On Sunday, the Bears beat Connecticut College by 42 seconds. Coxswain Julianna Harvin, Sarah Jane Otey, Holly Madden, Tiffany Zehnle, Jess Ward, Erin Nolan, Kelli Normoyle, Catherine Schmitz and Brynna Cooke finished in seven minutes, 20 seconds.

The Bears are competing in the NEWMAC championship Saturday in Worcester, Mass. They finished second last season, trailing Wellesley by one second.

• The softball team has senior All-American Hayley Feindel (11-6, 1.68) back on the mound after missing 13 games with a broken finger. Junior Holli Bastinck leads the NEWMAC with a .485 batting average and has five home runs and a team-high 34 RBI. Freshman Jesse Richardson also is an offensive threat, batting .452 with 23 RBI while junior Stacia Sarwinski has a career-high six home runs to go with 23 RBI.

The Bears finish the conference regular season by hosting Springfield Friday and Babson on Saturday.

• An injury has sidelined junior Ed Sella for the last six games. The baseball team is 1-5 without Sella, who has a team-best .375 average,

Mariners making a splash

• Mitchell College continues to dominate the New England Collegiate Conference weekly men's tennis awards. Junior Rocco Devona of Waterford earned the league player of the week for the second time this season and fourth time in his career. Devona, a two-time all-conference selection, is undefeated in both singles and doubles.

• Last weekend the sailing team placed seventh at the Yale Southern Series Regatta. Mike D'Amico and Deborah Lee competed in the A Division and Eli Smith and Alex Bollella raced in the B Division for the Mariners.

Camel tracks

• The improving Conn College women's lacrosse team won its fifth game of the season last week. The Camels (5-9) are led by sophomore Lowell Abbott who ranks third in the NESCAC with 34 goals. Junior Katelyn Driscoll recently scored her 100th career goal.

• The women's sailing team moved up to fifth in the Sailing World Magazine's college rankings. The Camels will compete in the New England Women's Dinghy Championship this weekend.

Racing against Coast Guard last weekend, the women's novice four and varsity four posted wins, finishing in 7:52 and 8:13, respectively. The men's varsity four won its regatta in 7:17.

Around the region

• Fitch graduate Albrianna Farnum made a putt during sudden death to help Central Connecticut to the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational tournament championship. Central edged Robert Morris in a one-hole sudden death playoff. Farnum, a freshman, tied for seventh among individual golfers.

• St. Bernard graduate Hannah Benoit helped the St. Michael's College tennis team earn the No. 4 seed in the Northeast-10 tournament. Benoit plays singles for the Purple Knights (12-7, 10-3).

• Senior Anthony Malhoit of Waterford was recently honored during the Rhode Island basketball team's annual Fast Break Club Awards Banquet. He received the Bill Woodward Spirit of URI Award. He started his career as a walk-on and appeared in 23 games, starting five, last season. He capped off his career by finishing with 21 points and nine rebounds on Senior Night against Fordham Feb. 29.

• Western Connecticut State University softball player Nina Wojtkiewicz, a freshman from Griswold, recently was named the Little East Conference rookie of the week.

• Emmanuel College junior guard Michael Mailhot of Norwich earned a spot on the Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Sportsmanship team. A tri-captain, he averaged 10.8 points and led the team in three pointers (54) and assists (74), helping the Saints qualify for the conference tournament for the first time since 2009.

• Bridgewater State junior Meghan Dunn of Colchester was selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference co-pitcher of the week after going 3-0 with an earned run average of 0.35. Through 14 appearances, Dunn had an 8-4 record, a 2.69 earned run average with two shutouts and a save.
