Local Colleges: UConn plays Blue-White spring football game today

East Hartford — UConn will hold its annual Blue-White spring football game today at Rentschler Field. Kickoff is at 1 p.m., and admission and parking are free. The game will also be televised live on SNY.

The Huskies, who were 5-7 in coach Paul Pasqualoni's first season last year, have had a competitive spring, especially at the quarterback position where five players are vying for the starting job.

The candidates are senior incumbent Johnny McEntee, sophomore Scott McCummings, sophomore Mike Nebrich, junior college transfer Chandler Whitmer and true freshman Casey Cochran, the two-time Connecticut Gatorade Player of the Year from Masuk who graduated early and arrived on campus in January.

McCummings, however, has an injury and is not expected to play today, and don't expect the coaching staff to choose a starter until training camp in August.

UConn officials said the parking lots will open at 10 a.m. for tailgating and a FanFest will be held behind the main scoreboard inside the stadium when gates open at 11:30.

Baseball

• Old Lyme's Ryan Fuller homered twice in the first game as UConn swept a doubleheader from Rutgers in the Big East. UConn (23-16, 11-3) won both games 9-8, taking the second game on a Tim Martin RBI single in the 10th inning.

Fuller drove in six runs for the Huskies, who conclude the series with a noon game today at Dodd Stadium in Norwich.

• Matt Harrison had two hits and three RBI as UConn-Avery Point defeated the Springfield College junior varsity 12-3. Matt Martinez had two hits, two runs scored and two RBI and Bryan Rivera had two hits, two runs scored three RBI. Rob Rizzitelli pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed one run and struck out seven for the Pointers (24-12). Christian Dzienkiewicz pitched 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief.

• Junior Tyler Babkiewich's two-run double highlighted a five-run fifth inning as Coast Guard snapped a four-game losing streak with a 13-10 win over Framingham State. It was the 100th hit of Babkiewich's career. Junior Nate Toll (2-4) went the first six innings and allowed seven hits and four earned runs while striking out a season-high seven for Coast Guard (13-21).

Softball

• Mitchell College earned a pair of victories against Daniel Webster College, 11-2 and 8-0. St. Bernard graduate Marissa Thomas was the winning pitcher in the first game and Stacey Suplicki of New London hit an RBI single.
