Norwich -- Four residents of a Broadway apartment building were unable to return to their homes following a smoky fire late Saturday night.

Firefighters were called about 10:30 p.m. to 50 Broadway, where there was a fire in the T & A Fashion Clothing and More store, located on the ground floor of the building.

The four occupants who lived in apartments above the store were able to get out of the building. There were no injuries.

Battalion Chief Brad Keltonic said Sunday the fire was contained to the first floor and was under control in about 30 minutes. But because of extensive smoke damage to the four apartments in the 3 1/2-story wooden building, the occupants were not allowed back into the building.

The Southeastern Connecticut Chapter of the American Red Cross assisted the tenants, Keltonic said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
