The state Department of Consumer Protection is warning residents about paving scammers. Traveling pavers, often driving unmarked trucks and vans, push underpriced, inferior driveway paving and sealing services.
Hallmarks of the paving scam include high-pressure sales tactics and a request for payment in cash or personal check made out to cash.
The department advises residents to find local contractors registered with the state, rather than falling for door-to-door pitches. Certificates of insurance liability, dated contracts and written warranties also are advisable.
To verify a contractor's registration, call the department at 1 (800) 842-2649 or visit www.ct.gov/dcp.
