In response to The Day editorial, "NS ed board needs common ground," (April 20), the North Stonington Board of Education chairman has shown great restraint in dealing with the partisan bickering caused by one of its members, Robert Testa.

If Mr. Testa had not acted unfairly in calling a special meeting while some board members were unavailable, the present controversy would have been avoided.

No one is opposed to a review of financial records. However, a forensic audit would be a costly duplication of resources already spent for the yearly audit by the school's independent accounting firm. Indeed, that review has shown nothing improper during Natalie Pukas' tenure as superintendent.

Mr. Testa questions the discretionary use of funds that ultimately benefit the district. If Dr. Pukas has repaid any of this, it is because it was the right thing to do, not because there was any impropriety.

If any issue with discretionary spending remains, the board will have the opportunity to limit it. In the meantime, the board should recognize the good work that Dr. Pukas has done in her 38 years of service.

Editor's Note: Mr. Trebisacci is a North Stonington taxpayer and is the attorney for Mrs. Pukas.
