The senatorial debate April 19 in Norwich was excellent. I came away surprised by the fact that Republicans seem confused as to why they keep losing elections.

The reason is they've drifted away from their conservative roots and become liberal Republicans or little Democrats. Real Democrats, with their favored trading tax code, entitlement programs and union careers with golden benefits packages, are hard to beat.

Conservatism and liberalism are starkly different world views, governance styles, and make an easy contrast to be sold to voters if someone has the gumption to do it.

Two men at the debate did just that.

Peter Lumaj and Kie Westby both made excellent showings. They each articulated honest, sincere positions based on conservative principles and not Quinnipiac polling data.

One is an immigrant who came to our shores to build a new life and the other is a man dedicated as a soldier statesman to his family, community and church.

These are the men you want coaching Little League and opening businesses in your town. These should be the men you want to elect.

It's a shame so many voters missed the debate.
