Local National Football Foundation chapter to honor scholar-athletes on Sunday

The Southeastern Connecticut Chapter of the National Football Foundation will hold its annual Scholar-Athlete and Awards banquet Sunday night at Mohegan Sun.

The banquet begins at 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Waterford coach Mike Ellis at mellis@waterfordschools.org.

Peter Huoppi, director of multimedia at The Day, has been selected to receive the Bill Cawley Media Award.

In addition to Huoppi, five other adults will receive awards: Mitchell Etess of the Mohegan Sun (Distinguished American), Matt Fischer of the CIAC (Person of the Year), Jim Buonocore of Ledyard (Coach of the Year), John Krot of Killingly (Retired Coach), Tommy Thompson of New London (Dick North Administrator) and Ted Dumaine (Officials).

The list of student-athlete honorees includes Coast Guard Academy's Mike Rauch and the following high school seniors: Norwich Free Academy's Colin Gladue, Ledyard's Alex Manwaring, Bacon Academy's Spencer Dimock, Griswold's Derek Ward; Valley Regional/Old Lyme's Jimmy Fairfield-Sonn, New London's Brendan McNeil, East Lyme's Chad Berry, Montville's Ruben Diaz, Woodstock Academy's Travis Osborn, Killingly's Jesse Richeeds, Waterford's Zach Cash, Plainfield's Ryan Coady, Fitch's Seamus O'Brien, Windham's Santiago Gonzalez, St. Bernard's Alex Johnson and Stonington's Peter Hoops.
