Ledyard - A 13-year-old girl who went off the path while hiking and got lost in the woods off Vinegar Hill Road Sunday afternoon used her cell phone to direct rescue officials to her location.

She was located shortly after 6 p.m. and was uninjured, according to state police Sgt. Mark Devine.

The girl, whose name was not released, went into the woods at about 2 p.m. She called 911 about three hours later when she was unable to find her way out. Town and state police responded, along with personnel from the Gales Ferry and Ledyard fire departments.

The girl stayed on the phone while police drove around local roadways and sounded their sirens and firefighters called out from different areas, Devine said. A police dog also was taken to the scene. Once located, the girl was able to walk out of the woods with her rescuers and did not require medical attention.
