Local roundup: Stonington nips NFA in girls' lacrosse 10-9

Stonington - Emily Cassata scored the game-winning goal with seven minutes, 22 seconds remaining to give Stonington High School a 10-9 girls' lacrosse win over Norwich Free Academy on Monday.

The Bears (5-3), who have had five of their eight games decided by one goal and another by two, kept the Wildcats (4-5) off the board the rest of the way.

Monica Burdick led Stonington with four goals while Libby Morrison and Maya DePasquale added two apiece. Mega Gada scored four goals for the Wildcats and Paige Supples added two.

In other matches:

• Liz Scott had three goals and an assist to lead Old Lyme past rival Old Saybrook 9-7 in the Shoreline Conference. Allie Buckley added two goals and an assist and Rebe Gagne and Brooke Tinnerello scored two goals apiece for the Wildcats (4-4, 3-2), while Molly Beck led the Rams (4-3, 2-3) with two goals and an assist and Hudson Roarick had one goal and two assists.

• Meggie Carter had six goals and three assists and Williams School jumped out to an 11-1 halftime lead en route to a 20-1 win over Marianapolis Prep.

Maddie Lahm added four goals and two assists for the Blues (2-5) while Grace Mills had two goals and two assists and Zoe Moffett finished with one goal and four assists.

Boys' lacrosse

• Sean McMahon scored six goals and added an assist to lead Old Lyme past Old Saybrook 16-7 in the Shoreline Conference.

Jimmy Fairfield-Sonn added four goals and three assists for the Wildcats, Graham Girty had two goals and three assists and Dan Mayne had two goals and one assist. Teddy Gidis scored three goals and Robert Hanley two for the Rams.

Boys' golf

• Stonington's Chris Bovino shot a 1-over-par 36 at Elmrdige Golf Course to earn medalist honors and lead the Bears to a pair of victories, 6-1 over Griswold and 4.5-2.5 over East Lyme.

The Vikings beat Griswold 5-2. Sean Shepard shot a 37 for the Wolverines (4-3) while Francis Shields shot a 41 to lead East Lyme (6-4).

Stonington is 6-3.

• In a match between the two top teams in the Eastern Connecticut Conference Large Division, Woodstock Academy beat NFA, 6.5-.5, at Quinnatisset Country Club in Thompson.

Ryan Willis and Paul Butkevich of Woodstock (6-1, 5-0) shared medalist honors with a 36.

Justin Bohara shot a 37 to tie his No. 2 match and earn the only points for NFA (5-1, 4-1).

Girls' golf

• Abby Poster shot a 42 to earn medalist honors as NFA remained unbeaten with a 177-251 win over Middletown at Portland West Golf Course. Katie Strickland added a 43 for the Wildcats (4-0) while Olivia Carignan shot a 44 and Melissa Godere a 48.

Baseball

• Sophomore Jack Shannon scattered five hits in a complete game effort to earn his first varsity win, leading Williams School past Chase Collegiate, 6-0. Drew Watson had an RBI double and Parker Douglas had two singles and three RBI for the Blues (2-8).

• North Branford built an early 8-0 lead and cruised past Old Lyme, 12-2, in the Shoreline Conference. Billy Buscetto and Dylan Sheffield each doubled and drove in a run for the Wildcats (6-6). North Branford is 10-1.

• Grasso Tech scored five runs in the second inning on the way to a 9-5 win over Whitney Tech in the Constitution State Conference.

Jake Gironimi earned the win and went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Duane Shea had a hit and two RBI for the Eagles (3-7, 3-6).

• Mike McKeon needed only 66 pitches in a complete game effort to lead Norwich Tech to a 4-1 win over Goodwin Tech of New Britain. McKeon, who also drove in two runs, allowed four hits, one walk and struck out four for the Warriors (6-6), while Eddie Santiago went 2-for-3 and Tom Jankowski had a hit and two RBI.

Waterford Speedbowl

• The Waterford Speedbowl's popular Wild 'n Wacky Wednesday racing program returns Wednesday night and will run for 21 weeks. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and racing in four divisions - Legends Cars, Bandoleros, Super X-Cars and X-Cars - begins at 7. Admission is $8 for adults and chidren 14-under will be admitted for free.

Girls' basketball

• St. Bernard and coach Mike Nystrom recently received the 2011-12 Richard L. Walker Sportsmanship Award from members of IAABO Board 8, the local officiating group. "This is a huge honor for our student athletes, coaching staff, and athletic department," athletic director Brendan Case said. "We work very hard on exhibiting strong sportsmanship on all of our athletic teams."

H.S. crew

• Old Lyme's girls' Varsity 1 boat of coxswain Elliot Mueller, Hanna Paynter, Arielle Sherman-Golembeski, Emily Powers and Elena Sloan placed first in a race on Saturday against Hopkins and Valley Regional.
