Compromise reached on education bill

Hartford -- State Sen. Andrea Stillman, D-Waterford, said today that a  compromise has been reached on the governor’s education bill, and the Senate could vote on the revised bill tonight.

“There is a tentative deal,” Stillman, co-chair of the legislature’s education committee, told reporters this afternoon.

Stillman would not reveal any details of the new Senate Bill 24, deferring that announcement to Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, who may hold a news conference about the education bill later this afternoon or early evening. “We’re still making minor changes here and there,” she said.

Stillman said the compromise between the Malloy administration and legislative leaders was reached at 2 a.m. Sunday following many hours of negotiations at the Capitol.

Commissioner of Education Stefan Pryor took part in discussions, as did Stillman and the other education committee co-chair, Rep. Andrew Fleischman of West Hartford.

The state’s two teachers' unions were not at the negotiating table, Stillman said.
