BRANFORD, Conn. (AP) — A Branford man is facing an animal cruelty charge for allegedly choking his dog to death after it urinated on him and bit him.

Twenty-two-year-old Alex Wullaert was arrested Monday following a police investigation into the death of a dog found in a discarded plastic bag in Madison in January. He's also charged with littering.

Police say a microchip found inside the dog's body during a necropsy identified Wullaert as the owner. Authorities say Wullaert confessed to strangling the pit bull-boxer mix at his home after it urinated on his leg and bit him.

Wullaert was released on a promise to appear in state court on May 15. He couldn't be reached for comment Tuesday. There's no phone listing for him, and it's not clear if he has a lawyer.
