Kudos to the The Day for its May 2 article, "Electric vehicle charging station opens," concerning Norwich Public Utilities (NPU). NPU's continued advances in the use of alternatives to petroleum fuels have been continually recognized in this field nationally by the Department of Energy since 1993. NPU's forward thinking and actual implementation of alternative fuel vehicles on the road has been a great step in the local effort to improve air quality and reduce our dependence on imported oil.
The NPU management also has had the wisdom to include their employees in the loop of each of these projects. The acceptance of these vehicles by the operators, and those who work in and around them, has been a major contribution to their success.
The Norwich Clean Cities organization, cited in your article, also has quietly been working in the background since 1994 supporting NPU and other partners in southeastern Connecticut. See: www.norwichcleancities.org for additional details.
