In the letter published April 9, "GOP helping 1 percent instead of the workers," the writer states "it's time Congress put our country's needs ahead of politics," and ends with: "Let's get back to a government and economy that works for everyone."
Let us look at a little history before blaming it all on the GOP. The Democrats took over the House and Senate Jan. 3, 2007, the start of the 110th Congress not Jan. 20, 2009. On Jan. 3, 2007 the Dow closed at 12,621.77, the GDP was 3.5 percent; unemployment was 4.6 percent; President Bush's economic policies set a record of 52 straight months of job creation.
Jan. 3, 2007 was the day Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee. Fifteen months later we had an economic meltdown. Bush asked Congress 17 times to stop Fannie and Freddie as too financially risky. Barney blocked it and the sky fell.
I agree about "getting an economy that works for everyone." I would prefer everyone work who is able and not just "Hang out for a Handout." Cut welfare, require drug testing to qualify for assistance.
This is not a Republican vs Democrat problem. It is America's problem and Americans must solve it.
