John S. Johnson Chairman of OpSail2012CT New London
Publication: The Day
Columnist David Collins has written about the many good things that are happening in New London, but there's something to add: The Tall Ships are coming.
New London (and Niantic) will be hosting ships participating in OpSail2012CT. OpSail has joined with the U.S. Navy on the bicentennial of the War of 1812. More than 20 ships will gather in Niantic Bay on July 6, where there will be festivities. On Saturday morning the ships will head to New London in a Parade of Sail.
In addition to the magnificent sailing ships, the harbor will be full of Navy Coast Guard ships, all open for visits. OpSail will have a robust presence at Fort Trumbull, the great Sailfest event will be in and around Waterfront Park, and the military will be at State Pier.
There will be fireworks, food vendors, and lots of live entertainment all three days beginning Friday at noon with the kick off of Sailfest. You can visit our websites, www.OpSail2012CT.org and www.sailfest.org to read more.
I'm glad that Mr. Collins tipped his hat to New London because with OpSail and Sailfest leading the way, New London will be a great place to visit this summer.
