New London — Emergency personnel rescued a local man from the woods in the area of 108 Hawthorne Drive early Sunday morning after residents heard him screaming for help.

Police and fire received 911 calls around midnight. Police said the man, Robert Mucciaroni, 45, of New London, was found in a wooded area near the power lines. Fire crews placed him in a Stokes basket and carried him out of the woods.

The man was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital for back pain.

Police said the man apparently went hiking during daylight hours and got lost in the woods.
