The e’er curious Jon Young continues to set new sonic forest fires as he skips merrily through the New London music scene. He’ll strap on an acoustic guitar at noon Thursday when he headlines our second “Live Lunch Break” concert — a live performance, streaming at theday.com, from inside The Day’s baronial headquarters.
In the popular band Straight to VHS — an outfit so garage-y you could smell spilled motor oil and lawn clippings stuck to a mower blade when you listened — Young combined the raw power of the Stooges with the rugged melodicism of The Replacements. More recently, in the new band Hind Legs, Young and company are stretching out and exploring a brand of pop more reminscent of Nels Cline-era Wilco. Young’s adept vocal hooks and adventurous writing should provide a fine lunchtime soundtrack.
