The Stonington Board of Education should enthusiastically accept local residents to serve on their superintendent search committee. It would be an insult to the community and the democratic process to do otherwise. The fear expressed by the board chair that a resident can't be expected to maintain confidentiality is simply ridiculous. It is unfortunate that the chairwoman would force us residents to rely on the expensive advice of supposed consultants when the last choice for superintendent only stayed on the job for less than three years. Perhaps this exclusive, secretive attitude is responsible for voter reluctance to embrace the town budget.
